Cycling
“The biggest disaster in human history was the invention of the combustion engine.”
--Sir Wilfred Thesinger
This is more of a passion than an actual pursuit. In my research for Hammer (see Current Projects) I have learned a great deal about cycling. My favorite ride is a fixed gear bike- a single gear
track bike which is also standard equipment for bike messengers in NYC. Not only are fixies aesthetically beautiful, but they make for a tremendous workout on the hills of Central Park. Because most fixed gear bikes don't have a
freewheel, there is no coasting, and you have to use backwards resistance from the legs to slow the bike. Going up and down hills can be quite an adventure!
I currently own a 2004 Bianchi Pista which I use to get around town, and when I want to get a little break from all the running. And unlike most bike messengers, I actually have a front brake and wear a helmet.
Additionally, I own a 2003 Bianchi Vigorelli road bike, which I will pull out for longer rides or lazier days. It's always nice to change things up now and again!
